Assignment 1: Copy Qi Baishi's Grape Vines with Basket
Materials
1) Paper:
Unsized Single Xuan Rice Paper is recommended, other raw rice paper, semi-sized or double Xuan are optional.
Generally speaking, the grape fruits should be painted in live size in CBP. So if your paper is small you only paint a partial composition from the original. The Size I used was 13.5" x 36".
How to make a common "T-cut" from a full sheet(54" x 27") rice paper:
a) First, cut the 1/3 of the sheet off, which would be 18" x 27";
b) Then cut the remaining 2/3 sheet in half so you will get two 36" x 13.5" strips.
2) Brushes:
BHA Five basic brushes are recommended.
You will need several kind of brushes, a super wash or a large sheep/goat brush for painting the leaves and a large stiff hair brush(wolf, badger, ox-ear etc) for basket and vines, a large soft or combination brush for fruits, and small wolf brush for stems and veins.
2) Paint Morning Glory flowers with Inspiration of Qi Baishi
Learn the master's ideas instead of exactly copying him. You may borrow his elements in your own composition and use different colors while following his painting style.
