Class Description:
Embark on a captivating Gongbi Chinese brush painting workshop with Victoria Li as we delve into the mesmerizing world of Peonies. Using the Gongbi Flower Paintings by the 3 Masters as a reference (as shown on the class thumbnail image; a high-definition copy will be provided in the class handout), we will explore the techniques and skills necessary to create stunning peony paintings.

The focal point of our painting will be the title "大富大貴" (Great Wealth and Great Nobility), a phrase that encapsulates the grandeur and prosperity associated with peonies. As we study peonies in Gongbi style, we will deepen our appreciation for their intricate beauty and symbolic significance, celebrating them as one of the world's most beloved flowers. In this class, students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity by using various colors to paint their favorite peony from the same template (refer to Victoria's pre-class color studies below).

Our session will commence with a calligraphy practice session in four styles: Standard, walking, cursive, and clerical. This practice will enhance brush control and line quality, which are vital for Gongbi outline. During the painting session, we will explore fundamental Gongbi painting skills, including techniques for holding two brushes in one hand for color shading, mastering ink outlines, and learning the three basic ways of color washing: separated washing, glazing, and highlighting.

As we progress through the sample painting, we will be available to answer questions and provide critiques on students' works in progress, regardless of their completion level. The Zoom class will be recorded, granting registered participants unlimited access to review it at their convenience. Additionally, students may submit their finished work via email for further critique.

Whether you're a beginner or have some experience with brush painting, this workshop welcomes participants of all levels. The techniques learned from Gongbi practice will establish a solid foundation for exploring other styles of brush painting. Moreover, both calligraphy and Gongbi painting emphasize line quality, making the study of these art forms together highly beneficial for brush control. Lastly, the coloring techniques used in Gongbi painting bear resemblance to western-style watercolor painting, albeit with distinct compositions and brush strokes. Thus, studying Chinese brush calligraphy and Gongbi painting will add an exquisite touch to your watercolor artwork.
