The story of Yi-te Ke began in 1865 when scholar Hsieh Songtai, after a failed attempt at the civil service exams, sought to create a convenient liquid ink. Setting up shop on Beijing's famous Liu Li Chang street, he named his creation "Yi-te Ke," meaning "One-Gain House."
