Lesson 31: Finger Paintings with Master Zhou Xueyu
(*To join Henry Li's online Chinese brush painting class, please click here . )
This lesson is very different than any thing we have learned so far. By using our fingers instead of brush to paint, our mind is connected directly to the sensitive nerve endings on our finger tips to paint "straight from the heart". Master Zhou Xueyu has inherited his finger painting skills from his artistic ancestors and he is so generous to share them with us with no reserve. He will show us some finger painting basics and then paint a plum blossom and a landscape with only his fingers! Prof Zhou made it very easy to follow and you will see my practices with his guidance.

Demos and Assignments
1) Stroke Practices with Emphasis on Line Quality
In a broad sense, finger painting not only includes fingers and hand also include brush and other non-brush tools used for painting. What are the significance of those three effects that Prof Zhou has mentioned in Part 1 introduction, namely "Stains on a leaking wall", "Stick drawing on sand" or "bites of woodworms"? Please practice your strokes with the inspiration of these metaphors and the non-brush tool or fingers.
2) "A Branch of Red Plum in Snow"
Please do a finger painting after watching Prof Zhou's demo by following his steps and techniques.
4) Blue Heron, Lotus or Other Subject Matters I like.
Try to apply some the finger painting techniques you learned from this Lesson to paint your favorite subject matters and see what difference it makes.
